Mireya Hernandez, a food service tech at Sonoma Valley High School in Sonoma, Calif., will benefit from the district’s decision to raise its minimum wage to $15 per hour ahead of the state’s 2022 mandate for that increase. School districts nationwide, which have large numbers of low-wage workers, are feeling the fiscal pressure as states and municipalities seek to boost minimum wages to what’s considered a living wage.
